McCain: Better not count a Clinton out of any race

Will Hillary Clinton Endorse John McCain? Well, by all rights she should. Why don't you give Hill a visit and make the suggestion!

Senator John McCain had strong words of praise for Hillary Clinton during his appearance in Nashville, Tennessee on Monday.

Perhaps mindful of the many Clinton supporters who have suggested they might vote for him if she is not the Democratic nominee, McCain responded to a question from the audience by stating, "I have known Senator Clinton, I admire her, and I respect her. She has inspired generations of American women to believe that they can reach the highest office in this nation (applause), and I respect her campaign and I respect her."

"She and I have stark differences on issues," continued McCain, "but I admire the campaign that she has run. I think she deserves a great deal of credit."

"And I think a few of us who have been around politics for a while learned a lesson way back in 1992," McCain concluded, "that you better never count a Clinton out of any race, otherwise it may be, uh -- but I respect the campaign that she has run."

Bill Clinton's 1992 primary campaign was battered both by stories about his avoidance of the draft during the Vietnam War and by allegations of his affair with Gennifer Flowers, but he bounced back to take the nomination. This has given rise to the conventional wisdom about Hillary that -- as CNN's Jessica Yellin stated in February -- "she's a Clinton, so you never count her out."
