The past several days we have seen public and private polling data showing the race between the Obama/Biden campaing and the McCain/Palin ticket tightening.
Given Sen. Obama's huge financial advantage, he has been able to saturate the TV airwaves in dozens of states with millions of dollars in ads that attacked Sen. McCain and put states that were historically "red" states into the toss-up category (think North Carolina, Indiana, Virginia, Nevada, Florida, etc...)
It will be hard for the McCain/Palin ticket to win all of these states as well as the "red" states of Colorado and New Mexico.
And so for us to win the Electoral College on Tuesday the key is to win most of these "red" states, and then pick up 1 - 2 states that Obama thought he "owned." Those pickoff states are: Pennsylvania (21 Electoral Votes), Iowa (7 Electoral Votes), and Michigan (17 Electoral Votes).
In Michigan, the latest Detroit News/EPIC-MRA poll shows Obama currently only has 50% of the vote, and if Undecideds break for McCain, Obama's lead would be only 2%. If Obama loses a point or two from his 50% standing he will likely lose this state and its 17 Electoral Votes!!
This poll was taken one-week ago, and our data indicates the race has gotten even closer. Rassmussen Reports also shows a tightening of the race. With the national Zogby 1-day tracking poll showing McCain pulling ahead of Obama on Friday, it is clear the momentum is with McCain/Palin.
On Friday the Our Country Deserves Better Committee made yet another TV advertising buy that will run through Monday. We will have ads running every hour on the hour on the leading cable news stations -- to reach the most likely voters. This saturation buy comes on top of the hundreds of thousands of dollars we have spent on anti-Obama TV ads across the state the past two weeks, and our two swings through the state where we had 13 pro-McCain/Palin rallies that received considerable press coverage.
We believe Michigan is very much in play. Polls likely over-sample Obama supporters and also probably include a few percentage points of artificial support from those voters intimidated to say they are voting for McCain given the media's campaign to portray McCain supporters as being "racist" or "intolerant." And there is no early voting in Michigan, so we can still catch Obama by Tuesday!
We can expand our TV ad campaign to go through Tuesday midday - so that the last thing undecided voters see is our TV ads reminding them of the risk of higher taxes and a weak foreign policy/national defense if Obama is elected.
